Imagine your friend gives you a lottery ticket. In this hypothetical situation, you’re like me, and you haven’t followed the jackpot rising to a billion dollars. You just stick the ticket in your pocket and forget about it.  In fact, it’s likely the ticket will end up in the wash or fall out of your pocket, lost and forgotten.

Then your friend calls and tells you to check your ticket. Someone from the gas station where they bought the ticket has won. It could be you!

You check the numbers and realize you hold a winning lottery ticket worth hundreds of millions of dollars. In that moment of realization, how does your relationship with that piece of paper change? You don’t crumple it up or throw it on the floor of your car. You protect it. You treat it as sacred.

Yet we often treat our only true wealth, the inner wealth of our spiritual life, like an ordinary scrap paper.

Shifting from “Take-for-Granted” to Sacred

The reality is that we possess the ultimate wealth, spiritual wealth. The moments we often write off as “boring” or “routine”—sitting in a quiet room, reading a spiritual book, or listening to a podcast—are actually peak moments of cosmic privilege.

It is incredibly easy, however, to spend 90% of our mental energy focusing on what is going wrong. You’re stuck in traffic or the coffee machine breaks, and we’re spiraling down into the minor inconveniences of daily life.

But what if you paused, zoomed all the way out, and realized that you are currently holding the winning ticket to a cosmic lottery?

In Tibetan Buddhism, there is a foundational sequence of meditations known as the Lamrim (The Stages of the Path to Enlightenment). One of the very first meditations is on Our Precious Human Life. While traditional texts break this down into a list of “Eight Freedoms and Ten Endowments,” the core message is simple:

You are extraordinary.

Your life is an unimaginable stroke of good fortune!

The Blind Turtle and the 1-in-400-Trillion Chance

To shake us out of thinking we’re so ordinary, Buddha used an analogy:

Imagine a vast, turbulent ocean spanning the entire world. Floating randomly on the surface of this water is a single golden yoke (think a golden rope tied into a circle).

Swimming at the bottom of this ocean is a blind sea turtle, who only surfaces for air once every hundred years. What are the mathematical chances that, when the turtle surfaces, its neck happens to poke through the center of that drifting golden yoke? That, the teachings say, is the probability of gaining a life like ours.

If that feels too abstract, we can look to modern science. Astrophysicists and geneticists have calculated the odds of you being born as this exact, specific human being accounting for: the unbroken line of your ancestors surviving, your parents meeting, and the precise genetic combination that made you. The odds are roughly 1 in 400 trillion.

You didn’t just win a lottery. You won the ultimate, cosmic jackpot!

Unpacking Your “Winnings”: The 10 Endowments

In the traditional Lamrim teachings, your cosmic wealth is categorized into the Ten Endowments. The endowments are the favorable internal and external conditions that make a spiritual life possible. Rather than treating them like an ancient checklist, we can group them into three distinct “jackpot features” of your life today:

The Ten Endowments of a Precious Human Life

  1. Being a human: You have a human mind capable of rational thought.
  2. Central land birth: You are born where spiritual teachings are actively available.
  3. Intact faculties: You possess healthy physical and mental senses to study.
  4. Unpolluted lifestyle: You have not committed extreme negative actions that block growth.
  5. Faith in the Dharma: You feel a natural trust and respect for spiritual truth.
  6. A Buddha appeared: An enlightened teacher has actually manifested in history.
  7. The Dharma has been taught: That Buddha chose to share the spiritual path openly.
  8. The Dharma remains: The teachings are still alive and preserved today.
  9. Following the teachings: There is a community of practitioners you can join.
  10. Kindness of others: Society provides food, shelter, and support for your practice.

How Did We Win the Cosmic Lottery? The Three Causes

A fortune this massive doesn’t just drop out of the sky. To have a Precious Human Life, three cosmic criteria had to be met from your past lives:

  • Ethical Living: Living with a clean conscience and causing no harm. This is the primary cause that guarantees a human rebirth.
  • Generosity: Sharing what you have, which directly creates your current “jackpot features,” like safety, a functional mind, and easy access to wisdom.
  • Dedication: Selflessly dedicating your positive energy toward spiritual awakening.

Look around you. How many people do you see living ethically, giving generously, and striving for spiritual development? How many people do you see trying to evolve and actually doing it?  Your current safety, intelligence, and the fact that you are reading the words of the Buddha mean you already did the hard work. In fact, if you could see what you were like in your past life, you would witness an extraordinary person.

So don’t settle for an ordinary life, chasing happiness in the next relationship, job, or material wealth. Remember: you won the cosmic lottery and are positioned to unlock the key to lasting happiness.

The trick to claiming this good fortune is knowing that the causes of lasting happiness and peace are within. This knowledge makes happiness possible no matter where you live, how much money you have, or who accompanies you through this life. You paid for the ticket. Now, it’s just a matter of caching it in.

A 24-Hour Cosmic Experiment

To truly take advantage of our cosmic winnings, we have to start growing our inner wealth. The entire path of Buddhism boils down to something incredibly simple: becoming more peaceful and happy. That’s it. That is what every single one of us is chasing.

Even billionaires are just chasing happiness. They just happen to buy private jets, yachts, and islands thinking those things will finally deliver the happiness they seek. But in reality, material objects can’t create any lasting happiness or peace. Impermanent things and people can’t offer us anything lasting. The only thing that can create real happiness is training the mind to be happy.

So, this week, skip the material chase and try a radical experiment. Commit to just one completely happy, peaceful day. Here is your game plan:

  • The Morning Resolution: The moment you wake up, make a fierce determination: “Today is my happy, peaceful day.”
  • The Mid-Day Rescue: When the day gets busy and your mind inevitably starts to dip into frustration or anxiety, catch it. Remind yourself of things you’re grateful for and lift your state of mind back up. You can lift your mind back up by turning your attention to positive things.
  • Go All Out: For just twenty-four hours, treat your peace of mind as non-negotiable. No matter what external chaos happens around you, stubbornly turn your mind back to happy and peaceful.

See if you can create one happy, peaceful day. Because if you can successfully protect your peace for a single day, it proves something profound: it means that with a similar effort, you could do it again the next day. And the day after that.

It proves that a truly happy, peaceful life is entirely possible through the practice of training your mind. That knowledge is the ultimate wealth. Now go cache in on your winnings!
